Tips for Hiring Your Professional DJ

DJ VIP System 1Here are some general guidelines to follow when hiring a DJ for your event. The rules apply no matter the type of event, wedding, school function, company picnic, etc.

  1. Hiring a DJ it is one of the most important decision to be made during the event planning process, so don't try to save a bit of money and go with a budget DJ, or the cheapest. Hire a DJ that has experience with your type of event and is a true professional. Performing at a wedding is very different than playing at a high school dance. Both deserve attention to detail, but the amount of time involved varies dramatically.

  2. We at DJ VIP Presents on average spend 30 - 50 hours per event. We attend trade shows, bridal shows, and upgrade our equipment on a regular bases. *"The best price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. A full service disc jockey will normally invest 12 to 30 hrs, to your special event but it may appear that you are only paying for 4 hours. Consultations, music purchasing, editing, preparation, set-up, tear-down, and other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasions."

  3. You can never book your DJ to early, especially if your event is during the peak season. Here is a general guide on when to hire your DJ.

    • April, May, June, July, October, December
    • 8 - 18 months in advance

      • August, September, November
      • 6 - 8 months in advance

        • January, February, March
        • 4 - 6 months in advance

  4. You are hiring a DJ for a reason, so let them be your guide on what to play at your event. A good DJ will of course want client input, but allow them the flexibility to make song choices. An experienced DJ can read a crowd, intermingle your song requests and blend all types of music styles. You are paying a DJ to make your event special, so allow them to entertain you and your guests.

  5. When hiring a professional DJ he/she should put everything in writing. It should clearly outline cost, if a deposit is required and when the final payment is due, any options that may have been selected, start & end times, and cancellation policy. Of course each DJs contract is a little different but these are the basic elements each contract should contain.
